The Participants

Krum  is fourteen years old. Even though he seems to be a little shy, once you get to know him, you will realize that he has countless questions that need answers. This summer he attended a flower arranging class, and even skipped one of the meetings in order to take part in the photography shootout.

Nevrie is a seventeen-year-old Turkish girl who occasionally visits her parents. She is really modest, but at times she can be truly absorbing. Unfortunatelly, Nevrie could not come to “Haskovska Maritza” with the group, since she wanted to go home for her birthday.

Damian  is into photography and technology. He asks questions about cell phones, digital cameras, and computers for hours, and then suddenly changes the topic to something completely different. Even though he is only 18 years old, he worked as a construction worker during the summer.

Niki, a.k.a. Penev, is Damian’s partner in crime. Best friends, they would take turns visiting each other’s families when they did not have school. Niki is the kind of leader of the group who makes his voice heard. Serious in general, his funny comments cheered us up in the middle of our sessions.

Kika still remains one big riddle for me. In the course of the training she would seemingly not participate in any of the group assignments, but when it came time to actually take pictures, her talent of selecting the right scene would come alive.

Gergana is very lively and intelligent. Open-minded and talkative, she would assume a serious posture when it came time to work. The small kid in the picture is her sister, Rosalia, who is still in the orphanage for children between the ages of one and seven, but will soon join Gergana in Prof.Dr.Assen Zlatarov.

Silvia is a seventeen-year-old girl who is fond of Americn hip-hop and rap music. She was always engaged in the activities, but surprisingly enough, not as a photographer. She would just spend time commenting on a certain shot even without paying attention to what the purpose of the picture was.

Mitko is one of the people you will not notice even if you are working with him in a small group. During the training, he would never express his opinion on a certain topic, and would prefer to remain silent unless it was absolutely necessary for him to talk. Nevertheless, he showed an amazing ability to learn new things, which was displayed through his work with the camera.

Bojidara is the charming seventeen-year-old soccer player who would prefer kicking the ball for hours instead of doing her homework. She likes more to pose than to take pictures. Bojidara goes to a school for the mentally challenged.

Tsvety is really difficult to photograph. She entirely refused to take pictures or to be in a picture herself. Still, she did not miss a single class and participated in the discussions. She spoke up rarely, nevertheless her acute comments contributed to the dynamics of the group.

Asen is an eighteen-year-old, laid-back boy who would show up late for our meetings. He did not really work with the camera, even though the rare instances when he did proved his interesting vision of saving the moment through photography.

Nina has the maturity of a grown-up and the witticism of a kid. She has two little brothers who still live in “Nadejda” Orphanage with Rosalia, Gergana’s sister. Nina wants to be a college student, but she is still undecided about her concentration.

Martin  is an eighteen-year-old artist who would spend more time with the camera in order to take the perfect picture. His insightful comments and enthusiasm helped others understand the material better during the photography training. At the orphanage, Martin clearly  plays the role of the Big Brother and makes sure every single kid is doing well. His other hobbies include tattoo and apparel design.
